Antique Chinese hat ornament - Sage standing on a bat (0190). Gilt silver hat ornament in the shape of a bearded man who is standing on a Bat (Blessings). He depicts an Immortal or a God but he cannot exactly be identified without an attribute in his hands. In fact, his left hand is missing. The details of this small object are very fine.

Most hat ornaments depict the Eight Immortals (Luohan) and occasionally the God of Longevity, Shou Lao. They were usually sewn on the front of childrens hats as amulets but some of the more elaborate ones, sometimes adorned with kingfisher feathers, once graced the hats and clothing of women belonging to the upper classes.
