They would have been made by the same maker at the same time. At the centre of each pillow end contains a roundel with a zoomorphic creature inside. The creature sits on a bed of swirling decoration. The pillow end is adorned with a floral motif.
The flowers are vivid with the fine repousse ornamentation. A row of small holes has been punched near the edges allowing these silver plates to be sewn to the ends of a large cylindrical pillow. Traditionally, the pillows would be used to decorate the bridal bed, a custom probably adopted from the Malays. Peranakans were unique amongst the many Chinese who emigrated to Malaysia.
